The blogs on our website reflect local life in very special ways. We all know our lives have changed over the last few months and some of our blog writers tell the story of their own challenges and responses. Our picture editor, Nancy Murgatroyd, picks some highlights from our most recent postings.
Several visual artists have shared their stories of how Lockdown has affected their work. Jamie Sollis talks very movingly about the way his art has helped him in dark times. Sarah Cooper has rediscovered her love of painting and tells her uplifting story.
If you are missing the opportunity to enjoy local events, the Ysella Sims interviews help to fill the gap. She profiles the poet Chris White and interviews Robert Garnham, intriguingly known as “The Professor of Whimsy”.
Perhaps you are after a bit of escapism and would like to read about the beavers doing well on the River Otter? It has been shown that they have a beneficial effect on the ways water flows through the landscape thus helping to reduce flooding. Will they return to the Creedy?
Local history is always a popular topic. There is the fascinating story of a man from just outside Crediton who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and his part in bringing the news of Nelson’s death back to England.
We have been able to add some great videos to the website. The Music in the Porch blog shares of some of the music played by young musicians in Coleford during the summer and the blog tells their story. In Sometimes in our Lives, We all Need Help, you can hear young musicians from Chulmleigh School and read about the project which kept them all together in spite of their physical separation.
The Quarantine Quilt Project, run in Crediton by Significant Seams, was featured on BBC Spotlight. If you missed it you can watch the item by going to their blog.
My Life in Lockdown celebrates our own lockdown competition. We had an impressive range of entries including poems, prose, paintings, songs, sculpture and even a Lego model. Our judges were amazed by the creativity, skill and high quality of the work we received from all ages. It is all captured in the video.
