If you fancy getting closer to nature but value your home comforts, try glamping. The choice is large and includes gipsy caravans, shepherd’s huts, yurts, tents and lodges but all offer a peaceful, rural location and the outdoor living experience.

The 13th Century New Inn at Coleford, complete with thatched roof, oak beams and flagstone floor, offers great Westcountry food, award-winning cask ales, 4-star B&B and long-term resident Captain the parrot.  

At the 16th century former coaching house in Sandford, The Lamb has 11 individually styled hotel rooms an award-winning restaurant and a traditional bar with open fires, low ceilings and comfy sofas. Outside there is a sheltered garden on three levels which The Daily Telegraph considered one of the prettiest in England

When you want to leave the cooking – and of course the washing up to someone else, there’s also a choice of hotels in the area.

The multi-award-winning Paschoe House focuses on the 5 star country-house experience.  Set in twenty-five acres, overlooking a lake with rolling fields in all directions, Paschoe House is an idyllic oasis to enjoy local produce-driven menus inspired by the many farmers, growers and makers of great local ingredients. Fingle Glen Golf Hotel at Tedburn St Mary does exactly what it says on the tin. There’s an 18-hole course, comfortable bedrooms as well as 4-person holiday lodges, some equipped hot tubs for a little extra style and luxury.

A slice of history?

If you want to combine glorious countryside with rich heritage, then there are some interesting options.

Combe Lancey is a working sheep and cattle farm of 151 acres with accommodation in the historic 12th century manor house set in an attractive and mature garden. The house has had many formidable owners including Edward the Black Prince however the present owners are less formidable and more concerned with ensuring you have a comfortable stay.

You might find it difficult to drag your self away from Fursdon cottage with views like these.

Fursdon is an ancient country estate that has been in the same family for more than 760 years and it includes a self-catering cottage that sleeps up to 6.

Bickleigh Castle’s history goes back nearly a thousand years. In that time guests have included queens, dukes and princesses but today a title is not obligatory! There are four guest cottages on the estate sleeping between 5 and 13 guests. B & B with a difference.

So cottage or castle, there are so many unique and interesting places to stay in and around Crediton.
