Another of Tom Davies’ favourite local walks is a circular route starting in Newton St Cyres leading through Whiptail Wood and Whitestone Wood. The walk isabout 5.6 miles and takes 3 hours.
Start at Newton St Cyres village hall car park (A).
Take the lane past the village hall and post office climbing steadily up Riscombe Hill until you reach the road junction at Woodley Farm(B). Turn left and continue on the road towards Sherwood House until you reach the car park (C) just before the entrance gates to Sherwood House. Follow the footpath signs through Northridge Copse to (D) where you then cross a forestry track and enter Whiptail Wood. Climb through the wood and when you reach the top of the hill before the end of the wood turn left along a broad forestry track at E. Follow this track through Whitestone Wood which eventually descends into a steep wooded ravine to (F). At (F) cross the ford over the Shuttern Brook near some cottages and then turn right into a field following the blue signs indicating a permissive footpath.
Keep following the track known as Marsh Lane, passing Bakers Cottage at (G).
From here a tarmac lane brings you back to the foot of Riscombe Hill and the car park at Newton St Cyres.
