In his next favourite walk, Tom Davies takes us along a circular route of about 5 miles from Coldridge to Nymet Rowland and back again. The walk takes you along part of the Tarka Trail.
Starting in the village square outside Coldridge church (A) take the road north down a steep hill to (B) where a footpath crosses the road. Take the left hand path heading west across fields until you reach another lane (C), making a right turn over the River Taw and then soon after the bridge at (D) turn right along the signed footpath across fields.
With the Great Wood in sight, head uphill to the field corner and enter the wood.
Follow the good track through the wood and then emerging into more fields and a ruined farm building follow the path until you once again meet the road from Coldridge (E) turning right to junction (F) and right again to climb a steep hill towards Nymet Rowland.
On reaching the footpath on your right (G) follow this path to (H) and bear left over a footbridge and a steep track up a field towards Coldridge. The track follows the northern edge of the village before turning into a side street close to the church.
Extensions
The walk can be extended by 2 miles by taking the westward footpath at (D) and heading to Brushford church (I) and then returning to (D). A further extension is to carry on past the church at Brushford to Brushford Cross, turning left down the hill to the B3320 (J) left to Taw Bridge (K) and then left again along the Tarka Trail (L) back to (C).
