If you live in Crediton, or are visiting the shops, take some time to come down to the town square. To celebrate the easing of restrictions, twelve picnic tables with parasols have been installed, to provide a safe space for people to take a break, meet friends and catch up. The ‘Share in the Square’ initiative is aimed at reducing loneliness and revitalising the town centre, as Rod Brookes Hocking of Crediton Town Team explains.

Share in the Square is a new Town Team project supported by the Town and District Councils. From July until October twelve well-spaced picnic tables with benches and parasols will be in the town square for people to sit at, meet friends or take a break, completely free of charge.  Anyone can use them, and they’re large enough to allow two metres distance between people.

Our aim is to reduce the social isolation caused by the pandemic, by providing a safe place for people to meet up. We also want to help local shops by bringing more people  back into our town centre. The food and drink businesses around the square are supporting Share in the Square. It’s not necessary to buy refreshments in order to sit at the tables – though, if you fancy a take-out drink or snack, please do!  Volunteers from Crediton Rotary will be on hand to clean the tables regularly and to help ensure social distancing.  And, to liven things up at the weekends, Crediton Arts Centre will be organising some live music and other events to entertain you.

Crediton Town Team is a voluntary group which coordinates and supports projects that make Crediton a great place to live. Details of our various projects including the Boniface Heritage Trail and Crediton Festival can be found here.
